HYDERABAD: Nearly 200 students, lawyers and activists of Adivasi Sankshema Parishad were arrested by the police near Jeelugumalli forest check post on Khammam-West Godavari border on Saturday when they tried to proceed towards the Polavaram project site.The West Godavari police led by superintendent of police PC Ravi Varma  took the agitators into preventive custody who tried to move towards Polavaram project site. They were shifted to Jeelugumilli police station and later released.The members of Osmania University JAC, Telangana Advocates JAC and Adivasi Sankshema Parishad activists  were stopped at  Jeelugumalli by the police when they tried to continue their bus yatra to reach the Polavaram project site in West Godavari district. Earlier the students and lawyers reached Jeelugumilli village from Bhadrachalam in three buses and other vehicles on Saturday afternoon.When the agitators tried to proceed further towards Polavaram project site, the police prevented them and a scuffle ensued. Later police took them into preventive custody and shifted them to Jeelugumalli police station and later released. Condemning their arrests, the Osmania Students’ JAC chairman Vijay alleged that everyone had the right to visit any place in the country but the Andhra police arrested them deliberately. They staged a rasta roko for some time on the main road between Khammam and Jangareddygudem.The Advocates’ JAC leaders alleged that the Polavaram project would submerge hundreds of villages in the Telangana region.
