Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union president Kanhaiya Kumar's lawyer Subhash Chandran on Saturday claimed that police refused to help Kanhaiya despite repeated pleas and even asked why he was representing 'anti-nationals', 'Pakistani agent'.
Chandran said that he has given four names including that of Vikram Chauhan, who is accused of attacking JNU students and teachers, and mediapersons outside Patiala House Court on February 17. He added he can identify over 25 accused lawyers.
Nailing Delhi Police inaction in the Patiala House Court assault, Chandran revealed, "We requested the police there but there was no reaction. Police did nothing. Police were supporting the lawyers who were acting as goons. Police was mute spectators.
"At the time of the incident, I repeatedly asked an Investigating Officer from Tilak Nagar Police station, he instead asked me why I was there to support the 'anti-national', 'Pakistani agent'. I was shocked," said Chauhan
Chandran even claimed that the police refused to register the FIR.
The police is, however, denying claims of inaction and said Kanhaiya was produced in full police protection and 40 police personnel from South District in six cars were sent with him.
The remarks after Kanhaiya revealed that he was beaten and almost disrobed in the presence of police personnel in Patiala House Court premises. The alleged incident took place when a group of lawyers beat Kanhaiya, JNU students and mediapersons in the court premises on February 17.
Following the incident, the Supreme Court formed a team of five lawyers to submit a report on the law and order breakdown in the court where two group of lawyers were engaged in a brawl. Kanhaiya was also allegedly roughed up by lawyers before he was to be produced in court.
In the video accessed by CNN-IBN, Kanhaiya told the SC team that the police did not arrest the attackers even after he had identified them in the courtroom.
