New Delhi: Condemning the killings in Assam by ULFA, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday said that the gruesome act is an "act of cowardice and inhumanity".

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil reviewed the security scenario at a high-level meeting to take stock of the situation arising out of sudden spurt in ULFA killings.

After the meeting, Union Home Secretary V K Duggal said that a high-powered Central team led by Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal will leave for Assam on Sunday to inspect the situation.

The Assam government announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 3 lakh to the next of kin of those killed and Rs 50,000 to the injured in ULFA attacks on non-Assamese people in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts.

The ULFA attacks in various parts of Assam have brought the death toll to 48. It’s the first major series of attacks by the ULFA in the last one year in the state.

On Saturday morning, the ULFA militants killed 23 Bihari and Bengali brick-kiln workers and injured five others in Tinsukia's Saadiya area.

Security personnel have been dispatched to the area, which was not accessible by road and was across a river, district Superintendent of Police P K Bhuyan was quoted by PTI as saying.
