KOCHI: Although, the High Court direction and public outcry led to the facelift of the roads in Kochi, Panampilly Nagar road leading to the passport office still lies unattended. Despite repeated complaints by the residents, work is yet to begin on the road. “The road has been in this condition for a long time now. At first, we had complained to the area councillor. Then it was announced that the road was selected as one of the 13 roads to be repaired by the PWD. We expected a proper work at least then. However, it has been almost two months since that happened and yet nothing seems to be happening in this part of the city,” said Babu M N, a resident of Panampilly Nagar.M N Bhama Padmanabhan, Councillor, Panampilly Nagar, said that although the corporation had begun the work earlier, with the available fund they could repair only 500 metres. “By that time, the road had to be handed over to the PWD,” she said. Asked about the pathetic condition of the pocket roads, she said that the frequent rains were a major hindrance to the work. “Metal has been laid in most of the pocket roads. We are waiting for a break in the rains to do the rest of the work,” she added. Meanwhile, T I Jose, Executive Engineer, PWD (Roads Division), said that the delay was owing to the high estimate of the project. “The Panampilly Nagar road is highly damaged and the repair will cost more than the allotted amount of Rs 11 lakh. As per the rough estimate, it will come close to Rs 20 lakh. So, this case was forwarded to the Superintendent Engineer at Aluva and he has initiated the tendering procedures,” Jose said.
