The police, during investigations into the recent kidnap of a six -year-old girl from the city, have discovered that a Palakkad-based sex worker was behind the crime as she wanted a child to be involved in begging and earn money for her.
The police have arrested the 40-year-old woman based on the confession of one of the two accused from whom the child was rescued by the railway police in Palakkad a few days ago. The girl, a Class 1 student of a Corporation Elementary School near Saibaba Colony, went missing from July 9.
The child was rescued the same evening at the Olavakkode railway junction after passers-by alerted the policemen that a duo was moving around in a suspicious manner with a girl child.
The two men and the child were handed over the Coimbatore city police by the Kerala cops. During interrogations, the two accused identified themselves as Selvam (32) and Subramaniam (35) from Dindigul district and were labourers in the Flower Market area in the city.
The police took them into custody and interrogated them to find out whether there was any larger racket behind the kidnap incident.
“They revealed that they kidnapped the child on instructions of Meenakshi alias Arathal, a sex worker in Palakkad, whom Selvam used to visit frequently.
The woman because of her age was struggling hard to earn a livelihood. So she wanted a child to be involved in begging and earn money for her,” said Saibaba Colony inspector Srinivasalu.
Police said Meenakshi had prompted Selvam to kidnap a child and in turn promised to arrange his marriage with one of her relatives. “The other accused Subramaniam was a childhood friend of Selvam,” police said. Meenakshi has been remanded to judicial custody.
