Government Chief Whip P C George’s remarks on Congress leader T N Prathapan have landed the UDF in soup. George, who was part of the UDF delegation led by KPCC spokesperson M M Hassan which was on a fact finding mission in Nelliampathy two days ago, had made references to Prathapan’s caste.
Six UDF MLAs, including V D Satheesan, Hibi Eden, T N Prathapan, V T Balaram, K M Shaji of the Muslim League and Shreyams Kumar of the Socialist Janata - Democratic (SJD), have already announced that they would be going to Nelliampathy on August 6 as part of a fact finding mission. V T Balaram posted on Facebook that P C George’s casteist comments on his Congress colleague T N Pathapan was not acceptable.
In a democratic set up, a member of the Assembly represents the people and not a particular caste or community, he posted.
“P C George need not take up the task of protecting the forest mafia at the cost of the UDF. The UDF leadership should also introspect how George became the ‘self-styled’ leader of the Front,” Balaram told ‘Express’.
Meanwhile, Palakkad DCC president C V Balachandran, who is also the district chairman of the UDF, in a statement said that the casteist remarks of P C George on Prathapan were condemnable.
The state leadership of the Kerala Congress (M) should see to it that such outbursts are put to an end as it was against the tenets of coalition dharma. The UDF should see to it that leaders like George who besmirch and cause dishonour to the UDF through their statements are not sent to Palakkad district as its representative. Such statements which lack culture cannot be tolerated any more, he said.
