One killed in group clash, 10 held

PARAMAKUDI: One person was killed in a clash between members of the same community at Saraswathi Nagar, near Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district on Sunday. Police arrested 10 people in connection with the incident on Monday.According to sources, Ravichandran of Tholur village in Paramakudi panchayat union, was returning home from a wedding along with his wife Poongothai in a bus on Sunday night.A quarrel broke out in the bus between Ravichandran and Thangavelu of Saraswathi Nagar in which Ravichandran is alleged to have been beaten up. Ravichandran, accompanied by his relatives, had gone to the house of Thangavelu and tried to attack him. But, Thangavelu’s relatives had retaliated using lethal weapons. In the incident, Selvaraj (27) of Tholur, who was injured, died at the Paramakudi GH, while one Rajendran (43), Ravichandran and Poongothai, who were also injured, were admitted to the government hospital.On a complaint from one Marthandan, police arrested Thangavelu and four of his relatives. Similarly, on a complaint from Thamilchelvan (30) of Saraswathi Nagar, police arrested five more persons from Tholur.Police pickets have been posted in the affected area to prevent any untoward incident.
