Srinagar: One person was killed and at least 40 injured in clashes between stone pelters and security forces on Thursday in south Kashmir.
The clashes broke out after three Lashkar-e-Taiba militants were gunned down by the Army in Pulwama district in an early morning operation.
Tawseef Ahmad Wani, who was killed in the protest, was from Tengpuna village in Kakapora area. Sources said he received a serious injury in his abdomen, but it is not yet clear if it was a bullet wound or one caused by pellets.
He was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
The injured were taken to a Primary Health Centre in the area. Doctors there said the injuries were consistent to those caused by a pellet gun.
No army personnel was injured during the clashes, with sources saying the situation was handled by the police deployed.
The encounter in which the three militants were killed had started on Wednesday evening and lasted for nearly six hours.
This came after an intelligence input that three local boys of Lashkar-e-Taiba were holed up in a house located in a densely populated locality, a police official said.
“The three terrorists have been identified as locals Majid, Shariq and Irshad. Two AK-47 rifles have also been recovered from their possession,” added the official.
The official also said that the successful operation was a big blow to the LeT terror outfit which recently lost its commander Junaid Mattoo in an encounter at Arwin village in Anantnag district of South Kashmir on June 17.
This is the second successful operation against the terror outfit within three days.
On Wednesday, two terrorists were killed in an encounter in Sopore township of Baramulla district in north Kashmir.
