THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the city gearing up for Onam celebrations, the City Corporation is also gearing up to do some extra work. Expecting half the city to be out on the streets to watch and attend the Onam fair being planned by the Tourism Department during the Onam week, the Corporation has roped in some 970 extra employees to carry out the temporary cleaning exercise during the period.  Not just in the city, the extra employees would be pressed to service in the newly added wards too. As many as 20 additional employees have been given to the Health Inspector offices in the new wards. In the city premises, additional 50 to 100 employees would be provided. The temporary employees have started joining the Corporation from Monday onwards and would be ready for the Onam week once the Council also clears the proposal. The cleaning is a Herculean task especially in the more crowded places like East Fort and  Palayam and in the exhibition grounds, including Putharikandam, Manjalikulam, Kanakakunnu and so on. ‘’The Corporation, while granting licence for the exhibitions, simultaneously asks them to pay for the extra cleaning as well. The Kudumbashree women alone cannot do all the cleaning, that’s why we have roped in extra hands,’’ said S Pushpalatha, Health Standing Committee chairperson.  The previous Council also used to hike the employees’ numbers hugely during the festive seasons to meet the extra work. Especially, during Onam and Pongala. However, shortage of extra hands for the cleaning purpose is also proving another headache for the Corporation. Hike in wages could solve the problem to some extent, officials say.
