London: The defending champion Netherlands beat New Zealand 3-1 in a penalty shootout on Wednesday to reach the women's Olympic field hockey final.
Ellen Hoog scored the winner, backhanding the ball past New Zealand goalkeeper Bianca Russell to end a semifinal in which the Dutch came from a goal down each time to make it 1-1 at halftime and 2-2 at the end of regulation.
Neither team scored in extra time, forcing a shootout in which Naomi van As and Eva de Goede also scored, while goalie Joyce Sombroek made three saves.
