BANGALORE: Thanks to several measures taken to address the grievances of the farming community the number of suicide incidents involving farmers have drastically fallen in Karnataka.Addressing newsmen here on Friday, CM D V Sadananda Gowda said that farmer suicides which stood at 342 in the year 2007-08 and 337 in the following year has reduced to 242 in 2010-11 and about 79 till November 15 this year.Stating that the government is taking several measures to reduce the number of farmers suicide to zero in the state, the CM said that the government’s initiatives to disburse farm loan at cheap rates has prevented farmers from taking extreme steps to end their lives.He said under the Suvarnabhoomi Scheme envisaged to provide a financial assistance of Rs 10,000 per family of farmers with small land holdings have helped to boost the confidence of the farmers on the support of the government.He said that the government disbursed about Rs 1,000 crore under the scheme benefiting over 10 lakh farmers including that of over four lakh from the SC and ST community in the state.
