BHUBANESWAR: During the last three years Maoist activities have increased manifold in Nuapada district bordering Chhattisgarh and brutal killing of the ASI of police Kruparam Majhi was the latest incident of violence perpetrated by the red rebels. During the last three years, 17 persons, including nine Chhattisgarh cops, were killed by the Maoists in the district. Naxalites started asserting themselves in the district from 2009 and the same year on July 10, they set on fire a beat house in Soseng village inside Sunabeda sanctuary. A check gate of the sanctuary was attacked by the Naxalites on November 22, 2009 in Cherechuan village of Komna block. Maoists killed Girish Rout, a watchman of the forest department in Soseng gram panchayat area, on November 15, 2009. Two days later, Chandrasai Barge, a former ward member of Sunabeda gram panchayat, was killed. The Maoists struck again on April 28, 2010 by killing Sangram Kishore Swain, a forester. The rebels destroyed a forest bungalow in the Sunabeda sanctuary on September 15, 2010. On October 10 the same a year a van belonging to a contractor was burnt by the Maoists. A country liquor shop of Michhapali village of Komna block was set afire on January 9, 2011. They killed a contractor Tuna Patra on May 21, 2010. The Maoists struck in a big way when they killed nine Chhattisgarh police personnel, including an ASP, on May 23, 2011. They also took away two AK-47s, 2 SLRs and 5 INSAS guns from them. Two tribal youths Nagesh Majhi of Koten village and Paras Majhi of Kalmidadar village were killed by the Maoists by branding them as police informers. Sunil Kumar Dewangan, chairman of the Nuapada panchayat samiti, was killed by them on November 20, 2011. Opposition parties maintained that if the State Government does not act even after the killing of the police ASI, the area will completely go into their control in future.
