New Delhi: Search and rescue efforts for 12-year-old Aas Mohammad have been called off, more than 24 hours after he fell into an open manhole in Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh.
An Army rescue team was deployed to rescue the boy after he feel into the drain on Tuesday morning, but they could not make any headway and suspended their efforts late in the night.
The Ghaziabad municipal corporation workers however, continued the search through the night, checking each manhole, but to no avail. Officials working on the site say that chances of Aas’ surviving are slim.
Members of the team were reported to have lowered Oxygen cylinders into the drain to avoid Methane poisoning.
The fact that the manhole had been left open for the past three months and this is the second incident of the kind is a clear indicator of the callousness on the part of authorities.
