NIT Srinagar clashes: J&K Police files FIR for rioting, damage to public property
Sources say a group of 20 students and a few faculty members are under the scanner for fanning trouble in the institute.

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday registered a case in connection with clashes at NIT Srinagar. The police have filed an FIR under sections 148, 149, 188, 336, 427, 353, 188. These are acts of rioting, damage to public property and act causing danger to life.

Sources say a group of 20 students and a few faculty members are under the scanner for fanning trouble in the institute.

Meanwhile, a group of female students from other states on Thursday marched through the campus hanting "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" and demanding shifting of NIT from Kashmir to outside the Valley, officials said.

This is the third day of protests by outstation students who are demanding action against policemen involved in lathicharge on them.

On Wednesday, Union HRD ministry had sent a team of officials to assess the situation at NIT following the clashes which

were triggered by India's defeat at the hands of West Indies in the World Cup T20 last week.

The students put several demands before the team including shifting of the NIT out of Kashmir, action against police personnel and faculty members, and construction of temple in the campus.
