1. Delhi Metro to connect Dhaula Kuan stations with walkalators
The Delhi Metro has decided to connect the existing Dhaula Kuan station to the upcoming South Campus station with walkalators for the convenience of commuters.
"The upcoming station cannot be called an interchange station. But considering people would want to take the airport line, both the stations will be connected with walkaltors or travelators so that passengers carrying heavy luggage won't have to walk," said a senior official of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).
2. Deer death toll 'as high as 46' after central body inspection
The number of spotted deer deaths in Delhi zoo (National Zoological Park, Delhi) this year could be as high as 46, said sources Thursday.
According to a report in the the Indian Express, this makes the death toll higher than the 39 initially found by a three-member Central Zoo Authority (CZA) team following an inspection of the zoo on Tuesday.
Delhi zoo authorities, however, maintained their stated position of 16 spotted deer deaths – 13 prima facie tested positive for rabies and the reason for the death of the other three is yet to be ascertained.
3. 11-yr-old girl accused of stabbing woman doctor in Delhi
The mother of an 11-year-old girl who allegedly threw chilli powder in the eyes of a 71-year-old doctor and stabbed her in West Delhi's Tagore Garden Monday has claimed the whole incident is an accident.
The child's mother said she has worked in the doctor's house for the last 13 years as a domestic help. She claimed her daughter was being falsely implicated in the case, the Indian Express reported.
Police, however, said there were stab wounds on the elderly doctor's body.
4. Motorists who violate norms will lose licence but temporarily retain right to drive
Motorists who are found overspeeding or driving drunk in the capital will no longer lose their driving privileges immediately, with the Delhi High Court Thursday issuing directions to create a "proper procedure" for suspension of licences. The report was published in the Indian Express daily.
While acknowledging the need to prosecute traffic violators, the bench of Justice JR Midha has directed that a notice must be issued to the traffic violator when the licence is seized, which would allow the motorist to continue to drive for upto 90 days, till the time the transport department completed the procedure to suspend the licence.
5. Parents, students vandalise school after mass failure in Delhi school
Five people were arrested on charges of vandalism after the principal of a government school in Yamuna Vihar was gheraoed Tuesday by almost 300 angry students and their parents, who claimed she had "deliberately failed" them.
The incident took place in the Government Girls' Senior Secondary School (GGSSS) Tuesday afternoon, when some students of Class IX and XI and their parents allegedly held Principal Kanchan Jain hostage for over two hours and damaged school property.
They accused Jain of "deliberately failing" them in the re-examinations and said she had failed over 90 per cent of the students in the two classes.
6. Niti Aayog's new 15-year roadmap to roll out in 2017
India is changing the way it plans. It is thinking long-term.
From 2017, when the last fiveyear plan, a Soviet-era relic, winds down, the country will switch to a 15-year roadmap, in keeping with the global trend and its ambition to retain its status as the world's growth engine, a report in the Hindustan Times daily said.
Niti Aayog would draw the contours, specify targets, fix milestones and pilot the implementation of the new vision that would go "beyond the traditional area of 'Plan' and cover the aspects of internal security and defence", a government source, who did not wish to be identified, said.
7. Girl Hangs self, tells parents to donate organs
A 17-year-old girl hanged herself at her home in north Delhi's Maurice Nagar on Tuesday after she failed twice in her chemistry exams.
She left behind a suicide note urging her parents to donate her organs. The report was carried in the Hindustan Times daily.
"I cannot live without any destination… Sorry Papa I failed to be your good daughter… Don’t blame anybody for my extreme step… Papa my last wish is to donate my organs to needy persons…(sic)," were the last few words written by Reema Sood, a Class 11 student of a government school.
8. In JEE's top 100, 50 from CBSE schools
There is an elite JEE club -the 100 highest scorers. They are the ones who don't need to exercise options, they can handpick colleges and streams of their choice.
This year, the blue chip club consists of 50 candidates who studied at CBSE schools, followed by 21 from the Telangana state board -two boards that saw 52% of their students make the cut in JEE (Main), a report in the Times of India daily said.
Maharashtra ranked third, with seven candidates from its state board among the top 100 JEE (Main) scorers.
In all, 10,627 students from the Maharashtra state board have cleared the first hurdle and registered for JEE (Advanced), the gateway to the IITs. CBSE schools saw the largest share of students clearing JEE (Main), followed by 11,040 from the Telangana state board.
9. Ex-IPS officer provides chilled water to traffic cops
In blazing summer conditions, traffic police personnel face an occupational hazard.
They have no option but to remain outdoors, regardless of the extreme temperature and do their duty to citizens. One of their own, a former IPS officer, has come to their rescue, a report in the Times of India daily stated.
K Nityanandam has taken the initiative to supply bottles of cold water to traffic personnel since April and hopes to continue doing so, throughout the sweltering summer.
Every day since April, he distributes approximately 125 bottles of water to the traffic police officers across the city, at a monthly approximate cost of Rs 15,000.
10. Central teams survey Lothal to set up maritime history complex
Nearly 13 years after Narendra Modi, then the chief minister, mooted the idea of a maritime history complex at Lothal, the central and state government teams have started the groundwork to realize this ambitious project.
Teams from the Union ministry of culture and ministry of shipping have visited Lothal in the past 10 days to conduct a preliminary site analysis and identify land where the complex could come up, a report in the Times of India daily stated.
Modi had recently reiterated his desire to build a maritime history complex at Lothal, one of the towns of Harappan civilisation, about 70 km from Ahmedabad.
The teams also had meeting with the local officials of the Archeological Survey of India (ASI), the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) and other stake holders.
