SUNDARGARH: Presence of BJD supremo and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in Sundargarh district on Wednesday saw warring BJD leaders burying the hatchet in public for better prospects in the panchayat elections. With the campaign for the 35-member Sundargarh Zilla Parishad (ZP) poll reaching a crescendo, Naveen on Wednesday embarked on an electrifying campaign around 2.10 pm from Ujjalpur under Sundargarh Sadar Assembly segment. Accompanying him were Housing and Rural Development Minister Sarada Prasad Nayak and Rajya Sabha member Mangla Kisan. Together on the dais they shook hands in public and waved to the crowd, signaling all is well with them. The tussle for political oneupmanship between Nayak and Kisan had dragged the BJD to the league of faction-ridden Congress and BJP. Kisan is known for his impeccable credentials and commitment to the legacy of Biju Patnaik. Nayak, on the other hand, has emerged as a force to reckon with and is considered very close to BJD’s second-in-command Pyarimohan Mohapatra.Addressing the gathering in Odia, Naveen took a swipe at the opposition parties claiming that sans any issues they were opposing his government only for the ‘sake of opposition’. Exhorting the people to vote for the party candidates in the seven ZP seats, he said by doing so they would be voting to ensure a transparent government. Nayak and Mangla highlighted the achievements of the BJD Government.Naveen then flew to Kinjirikela of Talsara Assembly segment and campaigned for five ZP candidates. A group of women apprised him of bad road conditions and non-availability of BPL cards at Ujjalpur.Calling it a day, Naveen addressed a meeting at Kutra of Rajgangpur Assembly segment and canvassed for four candidates. However, Mangla could not reach his home block of Kutra. Naveen took the aerial route to Rourkela where he will make a night halt. On Thursday he will be attending public meetings at Hathibari of Birmtirapur Assembly segment and Lahunipara in the Bonai Assembly constituency before leaving for Sambalpur.
