Making a buck off the scenario is not limited to the jewellery shops alone. New horizons have been thrown open for the housewives as well. Working women and students are the main buyers of such ornaments, which are available at a price range varying from Rs 500 to Rs 2 lakh.  According to the industry sources, this business segment is at its budding stage. The first exclusive boutique for this segment was opened under the name ‘A Geeri Pai Precious’ by A Geeri Pai Jewellers here.  “We have started a separate section for natural stone bead ornaments in our shop. The increased demand from women forced us to open a boutique for natural stone chains only,” said Ramesh S Pai, managing partner of A Geeri Pai Jewellers.More jewellery shops are planning to open separate sections for natural stone bead ornaments, he said. Women covet wearing natural stone bead necklaces these days.“Apart from the price and fashion appeal, the medicinal benefits, beauty and the availability of jewels matching one’s skin tone and attire are the main reasons behind the emergence of this new market segment,” he added.Carnelian, ruby, emerald, coral, blue sapphire and pearls are in good demand. People prefer the darker stone varieties and also chains with large beads these days, Ramesh added. To tap the new market, shops are planning to sell natural stone bracelets for gents too, he said. Confirming the latest trend of natural stones beads ornament market, All Kerala Gold and Silver Merchant’s Association president B Girirajan said that the possibility of more and more jewellers launching separate shops for natural stones cannot be ruled out. The rising gold prices and the making charges  make the gold ornaments costly. “The practice of wearing natural stone ornaments was there in the country from time immemorial. For example, people used to wear  necklaces made of blue sapphire to avoid bad times. People are of the belief that the natural stones are beneficial for the body too. This is only a byproduct and only loosely associated with the gold ornament market in the state,” he added.The natural stones are imported from countries like South Africa and Bahrain and are processed in Jaipur.After making it into ornaments, these are exported to European countries.The export market of natural stones is Rs 4,000 crore in India, which in turn eases the trade deficit of this country.
