Narrow escape for Chhattisgarh CM
Chhattisgarh CM Raman Singh had a providential escape when a train and sped past a crossing his convoy was to take.

New Delhi: It was a providential escape for Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh and the state Agriculture Minister Nanki Ram Kanwar when a goods train disregarded the signal and chugged past a railway crossing where the VIP convoy was about to cross.

According to Korba district’s Superintendent of Police Himanshu Gupta, the train sped past the Sunaliya railway crossing, about 275 km from state capital Raipur, ignoring the red signal.

Upon seeing the speeding train, the convoy's pilot car stopped and alerted the other vehicles that stopped immediately.

The railways immediately suspended the train's driver, assistant driver, the gateman and the cabin man at the level crossing and has rushed officials from its headquarters at nearby Bilaspur for an inquiry.

Officials said described the incident as a security lapse and a grievous mistake on the part of the railways, as gates on both sides of the crossing were open despite local railway authorities being informed about the time of CM’s cavalcade crossing.

Three top officials from the IPS, IFS and IAS, including Himanshu Gupta, and Zilla Panchayat CEO Sanjita Gupta were also in the convoy, they said.
