My attackers are minority, majority is with me: Taslima
Local political activists in Hyderabad attacked Taslima Nasreen on Thursday.

New Delhi: Controversial exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen, who was attacked by Muslim activists in Hyderabad on Thursday, said that she believed in democracy and hoped to live safely in this country.

" I believe in democracy. I hope to live safely in this country as a democrat. The people who attacked me are in a minority. I get support and sympathy from a majority of people. I thank them," she said.

Speaking about the incident, Nasreen, who was being escorted by police, said the MIM activists stormed in and started abusing her for her writing.

She said the protestors attempted to throw a chair at her and she could have been seriously injured had those present not rushed her to an adjacent room.

"I was rescued by police who escorted me to the airport,” she said.

"But I must say I have been touched by the love and concern of my well-wishers in Hyderabad. This proves I am living among my own people," said Nasreen.

Meanwhile, the Union government meanwhile condemned the attack as shameful.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dasmunsi said that it is highly regrettable if any person is subjected to any attack whether he or she is from India or abroad.

Taslima was in town for the book release of the Telugu translation of her latest novel Shodh.

A group of over 40 MIM workers, led by party MLAs Afsar Khan, Ahmed Pasha and Mouzam Khan, barged into the press club at Somajiguda just as the function was about to end.

They surged menacingly towards the dais as a stunned Nasreen looked on.

Telugu writer N Innaiah, the function's organiser and president of the rationalist organisation centre for Inquiry, and a press photographer were injured in the melee.

Organisers and journalists covering the event threw a protective ring around Nasreen and took her to an adjoining room.
