HYDERABAD: Phoenix, a fairly new band that started in the city six months ago, its versatility comes through its members. The most experienced and founding member of the band, 56 year-old Lokhi who plays bass, is a Physics lecturer. Then there’s Ruben, the lead vocalist, a trainer at Deloitte, Badrinath on the drums, who is an entrepreneur and Ankita who plays the keys and gives backing vocals, is a music teacher. And Keith the lead guitarist is the only full time musician in this band. Ruben says, “Despite the mix, we all have a lot of respect for each other and that’s what really works for us.” Adds Lokhi, “We just have fun. That’s our rule.” What makes this classical rock/reggae band more interesting is their influences. Badrinath, the drummer and a seasoned musician of 20 years, grew up in a strong Indian classical music background. “I come from a musical family. My mother is a classical singer. But despite the Indian influence, I gravitated towards western.” Keith and Ankita who are the youngest in their 20’s, say their influences come from all over the place. Says Keith, “I’ve been influenced by every one I’ve worked with. Especially Lokhi.” Ankitha, the newest recruit who joined the band two years ago, says, “It’s like being in a family. Everyone makes a difference.” The band though new, will definitely become the new buzz in town. With members like Lokhi and Badri who’ve been around, and played in bands like Alteregoz and Katalog among others, Phoenix plays tight and spot on. Ruben’s vocals are just as breezy and bohemian as the reggae he sings. Phoenix, named after the mythical bird, having risen from its ashes, does indeed have a long performance to look forward to.
