Mumbai chokes on rain, grinds to halt
For Mumbaikars, it's a tough start to a long and a wet week.

Mumbai: It has stopped raining in Mumbai but train and flight schedules have been thrown off gear due to persistent waterlogging.

For many Mumbaikars, it's a tough start to what could be a long, wet week.

Many outbound and inbound trains are running late due to waterlogged tracks and railway stations are choc-a-bloc with outstation travellers who seem to have resigned themselves to the wait.

“The waiting rooms are full, so we're just hanging around here,” says Mumbai resident Gaurav Singh who was stranded for hours.

While many like Gaurav rather wait, some like student Akshay Aggarwal have figured out other ways. “I'll just go to a hotel, I can't wait for three hours here,” he says.

The BMC says it has swung into action. Water pumps have been working through the night at various points to provide immediate relief.

“By and large, the roads have been brought to a safe condition. People don't really drive when it rains very heavily, so we do not expect a bottleneck in the roads,” says Municipal Commissioner, BMC JN Phatak.

But taxi drivers like Nizamuddin aren’t buying any of this. It's been a rough night for him on the JJ flyover.

“Municipality doesn't do anything. How can they leave water on a bridge? I'll have to spend the night here with my customer," he says.

The irritation is showing on airline passengers too. Subjected to one to two hour delays, they are now being advised to check flight schedules before heading to the airport.

The Met department is predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next 24 to 36 hours.

That means more water on the railway tracks and more overcast skies. So that long wait for a flight or train is not going to get over anytime soon.
