New Delhi: A meeting of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka MPs to decide whether a discussion on the Cauvery water-sharing issue could take place in Parliament ended abruptly on Tuesday with no consensus on the issue.
Convened by Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, almost all Central Ministers from Tamil Nadu, including P Chidambaram and Dayanidhi Maran, and MPs from Karnataka and Kerala attended the meeting.
Senior BJP leader Ananth Kumar demanded a discussion under Rule 193 (which entails no voting) on the final award of the Cauvery Waters Disputes Tribunal.
Surface Transport Minister and senior DMK minister T R Baalu strongly opposed Kumar’s demand, saying that any discussion on the issue would lead to unrest in both the states.
After the meeting, asserting that the discussion had not been held to take a decision, Chatterjee said the Tribunal was a statutory body and there was law.
Chatterjee added that he had arranged the meeting since the MPs had wanted a discussion on the issue.
Since several financial matters were pending, after the Finance Bill, the issue would be considered, the Speaker said
