CHENNAI: Corporates should shoulder the responsibility of safe driving. “Ford Motors, which concentrates on safe, economic and friendly driving, has changed me in terms of my attitude when I am on the road,” said Minnie Menon, columnist and DSFL evangelist, who attended the programme, Driving Skills of Life (DSFL). Ford India launched a book, First Gear, a guide for first time car buyers, and organised a pledge campaign called ‘I Pledge to Drive Safe’ on Thursday. At the event Tom Chackalachal, executive director of manufacturing, Ford India, said, “On an average, about 25,000 people in India die in road accidents every year. If we use seat belts while driving, the mortality rate can be brought down by 61 per cent. Fans of Ford India from this campaign must take a pledge to wear seat belts and practise the safety tips given to them on driving from the book, First Gear. Though traffic rules are important, self discipline is more important.”Derek Kirkby, advanced car driving trainer from South Africa, said, “All drivers who depend on their driving skills for bread and butter must blindly follow the ten tips for safe driving.” Observing the driving of Indian drivers, Derek said, “Indian drivers drive thinking the cars in front of them will follow the rules, while they continue cutting corners here and there. Most two-wheeler riders are without helmets, which is extremely dangerous. Helmets are mandatory and riders need to know their importance.”The Ford management also announced a new digital pledge campaign for safe driving. Tom Chackalackal and Minnie Menon launched the car buyer guide and were the first ones to take the pledge.
