ERODE: Pooh-poohing the DMK’s demand that Devikulam and Peermedu in Kerala be annexed to Tamil Nadu, Public Works Department Minister K V Ramalingam questioned why DMK chief M Karunanidhi did not take steps in this regard when his party was in power. The minister was on a visit to the district here on Sunday. Reminding the DMK that it is an ally of the United Progressive Alliance at the Centre, Ramalingam said the party did not take up the matter in a proper way when in power, but was now keen on adopting a resolution and did so at its recent general council meeting. On the rivalry between Stalin and Alagiri groups at the general council, he said it was DMK’s internal matter. “People do not think DMK as a party at all. It is a family property, functioning only for the benefit of Karunanidhi’s family,” he alleged. On another resolution of the DMK regarding functioning of the Anna Centenary Library at Kotturpuram, he said just 150 people used it daily. “If converted into a children’s hospital, a large section of people will benefit from it,” the minister said.He also denied allegations made by DMDK leader Vijayakanth that the opposition parties were not allowed to express their views in the State Assembly. “When we let him, he used unparliamentary words and threatened others. Such things could not be allowed. Hence, the Assembly Privilege Committee suspended him for 10 days,” Ramalingam said.
