KOCHI: The Central approval for the Kochi Metro Rail project is likely to be delayed as the Planning and Investment Board (PIB) meeting would be held only in second week of January. Earlier, the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) authorities had expected that the project might get the nod by December first week. Accordingly, KMRL had completed all the procedures by October and submitted the necessary documents by November first week. The pre-PIB meeting had referred the proposal to the Department of Expenditure. However, senior officials with the State Government said that since the government is pitching for the construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar, the Metro rail project is likely to be considered only after sorting out the Dam issue. “Right now, the state’s priority will be the Mullaperiyar issue. The government cannot take up both the projects simultaneously. Obviously, prominence will be given for the construction of new dam at Mullaperiyar,” an official said. The proposal will be presented before the Union Cabinet after obtaining the approval of the PIB.
