Paris: Art thieves stole works by Pablo Picasso, Fernand Leger, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque and Amedeo Modigliani worth 500 million euros ($ 620.8 million) from a Paris museum, French police and prosecutors said on Thursday.

The theft of the five paintings was discovered by employees at the Musee d'Art Moderne de la ville de Paris when they opened the museum on Thursday and noticed a smashed window pane.

According to French media, the stolen works include Picasso's "Dove with Green Peas", Matisse's "Pastorale", Braque's "Olive tree near l'Estaque", Modigliani's "Woman on the range" and Leger's "Still life with candlesticks".

Police have launched an investigation into the theft, which the museum values at 500 million euros, a spokesman for the Paris prosecutor's office said on Thursday.

Paris' Musee d'Art Moderne is situated in the capital's well-to-do 16th arrondissement, across the Seine river from the Eiffel Tower.
