HYDERABAD: The cosmetic industry is a thriving one. And the opening of stores by international brands like Mac, Chambor and Lush is a testimony to the Indian potential. But even as more players enter the scene, a few mavericks are tapping into the growing crowd of Indian women who are starting to incorporate a make-up routine into their daily regime. One such make-up artist is Marvie Ann Beck. A celebrity make-up artist, who made her bones in Bollywood (she’s painted the faces of Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and the likes) and also a mark in Hollywood (she was the hand behind Cate Blanchett’s make up for the Indian premiere of the movie Elizabeth), Marvie has just begun her own franchise of make-up services in Mumbai. While in the city to conduct a bridal workshop for a beauty salon chain, Marvie had a few quick words with City Express. The South FactorComing to Hyderabad for the second or third time, Marvie says of the market here, “The south is a widely unexplored territory and the potential is really high. Problem thus far was the lack of appropriate make-up. Most foundation bases were designed for light skin tones and darker people always have this complex of wanting to look fair. The combination of those two didn’t really go well. However, companies are now starting to realise that market and are coming out with tones and shades that suit darker skin. And that naturally makes the look better. So women now aren’t really obsessed with wanting to look fairer.”Bride ZoneAsk Marvie why she specifically focused on bridal make-up for her workshop and she says, “Well, people are always getting married! It’s one of the few special days in a woman’s life and the right make up will do wonders. Keeping in mind the different skin types, tones and looks, I’ve crafted a couple of looks. You have the diamond look, princess, international bride, mehendi, temple look and so on. All of these cater to very specific occasions in the whole wedding ceremony.”Staying BeautifulThe mother of a 10-year old son, who is known for her ‘natural’ look says, “To me the ‘natural’ look is flawless skin. So most of the make-up regimes I do, start off with trying to make the skin look so. Besides that, make up has evolved quite a lot. There are so many types of brushes, textures, tones, there is a lot of space to experiment. For darker tone people, texture is the key. There are different kinds of finishes --- from matt to metallic to shimmer, playing around with these will give them the desired effect. Also trying out 3-D and 4-D looks are in. For that, it’s about the layers and tones. For someone who steps out a lot, basic make would be a highlighting one feature in the face --- the eyes, the lips or the cheek bones.”
