Mumbai: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday inaugurated Terminal-2 at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai. "Mumbai terminal will establish new global benchmarks. I compliment Mumbai International Airport Ltd. for building a state- of-the-art airport," Singh said.
The new terminal has been built by GVK-led consortium and the cost of building it is close to Rs 5,500 crore. It has been designed by New York's Skidmore, Owings %26 Merrill LLP (SOM) who have also designed Dubai's Burj Khalifa and Chicago's Willis Tower.
The financial capital, can now boast of an airport at par with the best in the world. From gardens and fountains to multi-level car parks, the Terminal-2 at GVK Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport has much to show off. The state-of-the-art T2 is an integrated four-level terminal spread over 4.39 lakh square metres that can accommodate over 40 million passengers per year.
Project Head and Senior Vice President GVK Chanderbhan Manwani had earlier said, "This airport has set its own benchmark. People will measure other airports in comparison with Mumbai now."
For passengers complaining of immigration delays at the old international terminal's 80 immigration counters, T2 has 140 counters. With a larger waiting area, crowding too will be reduced and the multi-level car parking is another feather in its cap. Space for over 5000 vehicles, the nine-storeyed car park is one of the biggest in the country.
T2 has 37 travelators, 48 escalators and 72 elevators to aid those who fret over rushing to take connecting flights. T2 in fact has India's tallest airport escalator that stands at 11.6 metre.
From 2,300 CCTV cameras to a Fire Alarm System that comprises of 70,000 detection devices with 400 kms of cables along T2 to the security check in counters being placed even before the immigration area, great stress has been laid to ensure safety and security at terminal. The terminal which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister today will be open to public in a few weeks time.
