MANGALORE: The first intercity express train from Mangalore to Palakkad, driven by loco pilot M K Subramaniyam and assistant loco pilot K Chandrashekaran, was flagged off from Mangalore Central Railway station by Union Minister of State for Railways K H Muniyappa on Friday.Presently there are five daily and two weekly train services connecting Mangalore and Palakkad. The direct express train will comprise one AC chair car, four second class sitting, four general second class and two luggage-cum-second class coaches.The new train to depart from Mangalore at 12 pm and reaching Palakkad Junction at 6.15 pm will also serve as convenient link to Thiruvananthapuram and New Delhi, in addition to serving as link to Konkan train services from Mangalore. “Including this new train, as many as 18 new trains had been introduced to Mangalore,” Muniyappa informed. Besides 10 new trains to Mangalore, five trains had been extended and three bi-weekly trains had been introduced, the Union Minister informed.He acknowledged being aware of the aspirations of travelling public as Congress leaders Oscar Fernandes, B Janardhan Poojary, Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel regularly wrote to him.
