New Delhi: Director Shoojit Sircar has denied the buzz that his upcoming film 'Madras Cafe' is a story based on the political relations between India and Sri Lanka, insisting the flick is simply a spy thriller set in the backdrop of the two countries.
Shoojit has earlier named the film 'Jaffna', the Civil War-torn city in the neighbouring country mostly populated by Sri Lankan Tamils. "The film is a simple story of a spy. It's a thriller set in India and Sri Lanka but has no connections with Indian political system and the Tamil Tigers. All these are rumours. Jaffna was our working title and as we proceeded with the script, we thought 'Madras Cafe' will be more apt," Shoojit told PTI over phone from Kochi, where he is currently shooting the final stages of the film.
There were reports that the film has a reference to Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's assassination and also deals with the LTTE's activities in Sri Lanka.
"I don't know from where these rumours have come up because I never speak about the film beforehand. I keep exploring the script of my film until I get a satisfying end result," he added.
The film will see actor John Abraham, who is also the producer, and Nargis Fakri in the lead roles. Shoojit said he chose this unusual pairing because he feels they are actors whom he could mould the way he wants to.
"I wrote the script before 'Vicky Donor' and have always kept John in mind for the lead. It's a performance based film and I chose Nargis despite the negative reviews about her. When I met her I wanted to explore her freshness. Both my
actors are very fresh," he said.
The director denied that he had roped in Bengali superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee to play an important role in the film but the actor opted out because of the change in script.
"Prosenjit and I are very good friends. We spoke about the film at length when I was writing the script but he was never a part of the film. He is a brilliant actor and it would be great if he would have been the part of my film," said
Shoojit.
He has also finished shooting his other project 'Shoebite' with Amitabh Bachchan. The project is stalled for sometime but the director is smitten with the megastar. He is currently writing all the scripts keeping Big B in mind.
"It was a great experience working with Amitabh Bachchan. It was difficult for me to call the shots for him because he is such a senior actor. But his friendly attitude helped me be comfortable with him. He is an addiction and I am writing all my next scripts for him," he added.
