New Delhi: He may be getting all the adulation for his role in Vikramaditya Motwane's 'Lootera', but TV actor Vikrant Massey says that he wasn't expecting to get noticed for his role.
In a candid chat with IBNLIve.com, the actor, who is a popular face on the small screen, stated that he was at first rejected for the role of Devdas Mukherjee in 'Lootera'. "I had auditioned for the role while I was doing a show called 'Baba Aiso Varr Dhoondo 'and got rejected. I got busy with my TV assignments and I think the actor who was the original choice for the role backed out or something. Two weeks before 'Lootera' went on floors; I got a call and was told that I would be playing the role."
"Honestly, I did not expect to get noticed for 'Lootera'. I want to thank all those who appreciated by performance in the film. Just goes to show that koi role chhota ya bada nahi hota hai," said Vikrant.
The actor, who has been playing the lead characters in most of the TV soaps, had no qualms in playing Ranveer Singh's friend in the 'Lootera'. "For me the story in totality matters. The role I do should be challenging, doesn't matter if it is not the lead role." But wouldn't he want to make his Bollywood debut in a film which had him as the lead? "I was getting an opportunity to work with Vikramaditya Motwane. That was my priority. I actually don't believe in the concept of leading roles. I believe in characters and story as a whole."
Incidentally, the actors Massey idolizes- Pankaj Kapur, Irrfan, Manoj Bajpayee, all have played pivotal character roles in films and began their career on the small screen. "We are actors at the end of the day, medium doesn't really matter'.
Vikrant recalls that how the entire crew faced problems while shooting for 'Lootera'. The movie, which had been in the making for more than a year, faced lot of problems because of the harsh weather conditions. "The set in Dalhousie was snowed in. We were stranded there for a while but people at Phantom (Anurag Kashyap's production house) took good care of us. Weather played a crucial role in the film. You can see the contrast in the film itself. First half was shot in Purulia, West Bengal, which was really hot. So, bright and sunny palate of the scenes while the second half had temperatures in minus degree in Dalhousie."
Massey was all praises for Ranveer Singh who played his friend in the film. "Very down to earth guy and a good co-artist. It was an absolute pleasure to work with Ranveer," adds the actor.
Having worked in TV soaps like 'Balika Vadhu' and 'Baba Aiso Varr Dhoondo ', Vikrant is at present playing Ayan in 'Qubool Hai'. The serial, which has recently seen major twists in terms of its story has been gaining a lot of TRPs and is one of the most watched shows on television right now. "But the twists were pre planned, not to gain TRPs. The show is doing great and I am happy to be a part of it, "corrects Massey.
After 'Lootera', Vikrant will be seen playing one of the leads in cinematographer Nigam Bomzan's directorial debut. "I start working on it from September onwards," says Massey. Do we see him quitting TV in the near future, now that he is making his foray into films? "No plans of quitting TV as of now. I shot for 'Lootera' while working for various projects on small screen. I just want to continue to be a part of good stories, that's all," signs off Vikrant Massey.
