Life support training for traffic cops

BGS Global Hospitals has initiated a weekly programme to train both traffic police personnel and ambulance drivers in dealing with emergencies faced by accident victims at accident spots.

Inaugurating the programme, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M A Saleem on Tuesday stressed on importance of people being aware of providing basic life support to a patient/accident victim before the ambulance reaches the spot.

“Traffic police and the ambulance drivers are generally the first to reach an accident spot. One of the important responsibilities of a traffic policeman is to provide first aid and shift the patient to the hospital. The policeman has to be trained in these skills to handle emergencies,” Saleem said.

The initial target group for this training programme comprises policemen posted on the arterial roads connecting the city from neighbouring districts.

“It is imperative that traffic police and ambulance drivers are trained in basic life support and rescue systems. If an accident victim is given life support and rushed to a hospital with established trauma care within the golden hour, it is believed that about 8 out of 10 who would normally die in road traffic accidents can be saved,” said Ashok Kumar, Senior VP, BGS Global Hospitals.

Trained doctors of the hospital will use videos, practice demos, presentations and other such mechanisms to impart the skills.

Case scenarios would be also discussed and critical cases simulated to practise and acquire life saving skills hands on using models would be demonstrated.

The participants will also be trained in safe handling and shifting techniques to avoid further injury to the victim. Skills to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) through chest compressions, maintaining breathing, relieving choking at the accident site can help increase the chances of survival and save many lives.

The training session, attended by 100 traffic police personnel and about 50 ambulance drivers, aims at training various groups by December this year.
