Krishna phase-III to be reality soon

The proposed Krishna Drinking Water Supply Scheme Phase-III to tap additional 90 million gallons of water per day (MGD) to Greater Hyderabad is soon going to be a reality as Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy is expected to lay the foundation stone on or before August 15.

Minister for major industries and incharge minister for Hyderabad District, J Geetha Reddy, minister for labour Danam Nagender and minister for marketing and warehousing M Mukesh Goud held a review meeting on the status of Krishna Phase-III on Monday at Secretariat with HMWS&SB  managing director Adhar Sinha, Hyderabad district collector  S.A.M Rizvi and finance secretary L. Prem Chandra Reddy and other officials.

The ministers have been informed about the decision of the chief minister to avail `1,500 crore loan from HUDCO for Krishna Phase-III costing `1,670 crore and now that chief secretary Minnie Mathew also held a review meeting about Krishna Phase-III on August 1, the sanction orders are being issued  by the state government for the same in a day or two.

The ministers also told officials that the Krishna Phase-III should be completed in 18 months and also expedite the completion of Phase-I of Godavari Drinking Water Supply Scheme by 2013-14. The ministers reviewed the projected demand in water supply based on the population projections in GHMC area and observed that while Krishna Phase-III would help meet the present gap in demand-supply,the Godavari DWS Project would help make some surplus. At the same time the water board managing director has been asked to put in special efforts for increasing revenues of the board and also plug loopholes by avoiding wastage, leakage etc, for which special teams and extra staff would be deployed.

The total allocation for drinking water needs of Hyderabad from the river Krishna is 16.5 TMC. Already, 11 TMC of water is being drawn through Phase-I and II schemes. The balance available allocation from river Krishna is 5.5 TMC. Due to rapid urbanisation in Hyderabad and merger of surrounding municipalities into GHMC, IT Sectors, ORR Growth corridors, industrial clusters etc,  a huge water supply demand in addition to the normal domestic demand has developed. As of now, the city is experiencing a shortfall of over 100 to 125 MGD of water.

The main components of the proposed project are: Construction of WTP of 90 MGD capacity at Kodandapur (Rs 149 crore) and clear water transmission pipelines of pumping/gravity from Kodandapur to Sahebnagar (in 4 packages) for a total length of 114.3 Km (Rs 943 crore), construction of clear water reservoirs, MBRs for storage of 117 ML capacity to facilitate intermediate pumping at Kodandapur, Nasarlapally, Godakondla, construction of pump houses and erection of pumping equipment (Rs 65 crore) and laying of distribution trunk mains of 62 km length to connect to service reservoirs (Rs 150 crore). The clear water transmission mains will be laid parallel to the existing Phase I & II pipelines along the Nagarjunasagar-Hyderabad road.
