COIMBATORE: In a few days from now, when residents of New York cast their votes to elect members for the New York City Council, teachers of a school in Coimbatore will be silently praying for the victory of one of their former students.‘Hill’ Krishnan, an alumnus of the CMS Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Ganapathy in the city, has entered the fray as a Democrat candidate hoping to make it to the 51-member New York City Council by winning the Upper East Side seat.Teachers at the school on Wednesday vividly recalled their former student by his maiden name Thirumalai Krishnan. He had changed his first name to ‘Hill’ to make it easy for the Americans to understand.“Oh! we all remember him. He had studied here from class VIII to XII and passed out in 1994. During Christmas, he was the preferred choice to play the Santa Claus because of his brawny figure,” said Haja Sherif, principal of the school. Krishnan’s physics teacher Bhakiyam mused, “Apt to his name Krishnan, he was mischievous but only in an appreciable manner. He was so refined in mimicry that no function in the school would be complete without a skit by him.”
