Kolkata fire: two more AMRI officials arrested
This comes days after six directors of the AMRI Hospital were sent to the police custody till December 20.

New Delhi: Two more officials of south Kolkata's AMRI Hospital have been arrested over Friday's fire tragedy that left 91 people dead.

S Upadhay, senior vice-president and the hospital safety committee chairman and Sanjiv Pal, Administrative Officer, of the hospital were arrested on Tuesday, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Damayanti Sen said.

The two officials would be produced before a city court later in the day, he said.

Nine persons have so far been arrested in connection with the fire mishap. Earlier the police had arrested seven directors of the AMRI Hospital in connection with the fire.

The six arrested directors R S Goenka, S K Todi, Prashant Goenka, Manish Goenka, Ravi Todi and Dayanand Agarwal were charged mainly with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and negligence and were remanded to police custody by a city court till December 20.

Another arrested director R S Agarwal was not produced before court as he has been admitted to hospital.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had also cancelled the registration of the hospital.

The six directors of the hospital - including RS Goenka of Emami and SK Todi of Shrachi - were remanded to 10-day police custody on Saturday.

Mamata on Saturday had also ordered a judicial inquiry into the AMRI Hospital fire, even as the hospital came out with a statement, promising to set up of a five-member enquiry committee to probe into the tragedy.

It was at 3:30 am on Friday morning that the devastating fire claimed 91 lives began in the basement of the AMRI Hospital in Kolkata.
