BANGALORE: Thanks to a land audit ordered for the first time since its inception, the Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) has unearthed unaccounted property worth over Rs 1,000 crore. The audit also revealed existence of 18,000 of its properties which had not received mention in its assets register.Housing Minister B Somanna said here on Wednesday that the audit was ordered as it was unaware of the exact details of its properties. He added that the newly identified assets would be made available to the public through auction. The proceeds of the auction will be utilised by the cashstrapped housing agency for its future needs, the minister added.Somanna said that the newly identified properties were largely located outside Bangalore, instructing KHB officials to maintain clear records and fence them.Referring to the introduction of the Namma Mane Namma Swathu scheme, the minister said that installment dues for about 16 lakh Ashraya houses built across state remain outstanding.“The state government which had waived the interest component totaling to over `1000 crore has offered a one-time opportunity for original beneficiaries to pay the principal of `10,000 each for ownership,” he said.Maintaining that a survey was conducted to collect details of the dwellers of Ashraya houses, Somanna said: “The KHB will issue a 21-day notice to original beneficiaries; the houses will be transferred to the current occupants in case of no response.Loans will be offered to help them clear dues.” He said that there are about 16 lakh properties across the state waiting for transfer of ownership and the new scheme would help people become property owners. The government also plans to transfer ownership rights to those living in over 2200 slums across the state.Somanna advocated bringing all housing schemes under a single umbrella. He added the Centre agreed to bear half the cost in developing and providing amenities to housing projects.
