New Delhi: Love, determination and the murky channels of rural retribution will compete with a gripping period drama as three films of distinctly separate genres hit the big screens this Friday.
Two letters written by Mahatma Gandhi to German dictator Adolf Hitler addressing him as 'Dear Friend' during the latter's ambitious Eastern Europe push is subject of 'Gandhi to Hitler'.
The film stars the talented Raghuveer Yadav as the diminutive German dictator, Neha Dhupia as his love interest Eva Braun and Avijit Dutt as Mahatma Gandhi.
The film takes a parallel look at two socio-political set ups - the last days of Hitler when only his trusted comrades Eva and Joseph Goebbels stood by him through the upheavals in Germany - and India's desperate bid for freedom.
Directed by Rakesh Ranjan Kumar, the film was screened in Berlin in February and at the Cannes film festival in May where it received mostly positive reviews. Yadav, who started his career in television, reprises a role rejected by Anupam Kher who is in a battle with the makers of the film over his signing amount. Dutt starred in Deepa Mehta's 'Fire'. In his letters Gandhi requests Hitler to desist from his campaign of hate and embrace the path of non-violence.
‘Khap’ takes a look at the country’s rural justice system, social administration and retribution for marrying outside caste. Produced by Sangita Sinha and Siddhant Sinha of Ananda Film and Telecommunications, 'Khap' stars Om Puri, Govind Namdev, Manoj Pahwa, Anooradha Patel, Mohnish Bahl and Yuvika Choudhary of 'Om Shanti Om' fame.
Based on panchayat-approved honour killings prevalent mostly in India’s semi-urban hinterlands, the film has already run into hot waters with Khap panchayat leaders in Haryana strongly objecting to the plot and its screening in the state.
Director Sanjivan Lal’s ‘Bubble Gum’ is a coming-of-age story set in a small industrial town. It charts the ups and downs in a teenager’s life, standing in the threshold of adulthood, in the throws of romance for the first time.
Produced by Sushma Kaul, the family drama stars Sohail Lakhani, Apurva Arora, Sachin Khedekar and Tanvi Azmi. Sachin Khedekar plays a father to teenage boys, played by Lakhani and Delzad Hiwale, in Bubble Gum. It must be hard to be 14 but it’s harder forgetting the rollercoaster ride that is the teenage years. And as in all youth films, trouble stars when two teenaged boys vie for the attention of a young girl.
