Gavimath of Koppal is the famous Siddaganga of Karnataka. It is a matha with an attached educational institution accommodating thousands of poor students for free. As part of its expansion and progress, the Shrimath will be inaugurating a hostel to shelter 5,000 students for free on July 1. It will be equipped with modern facilities along with stress on education for poor children. Sri Gavisiddeshwara Mahaswamy is the current President of Gavi Math of Koppal who decided to upgrade the facilities of the hostel and increase the inclusion of more students. The first hostel for education under Sri Math was inaugurated in 2007. It accommodates 2,000 students.
Koppala Math practices ‘Trividha Dasoha’ or three forms of charity or service such as providing Anna (food), Ashraya (shelter/housing) and Akshara (education) for the deprived sections of society through these hostels. The new building has been expanded to include the earlier building to add more facilities. There are 130 rooms in this building and each room can accommodate 18 to 20 students. Twenty spacious dormitories, modern facilities for cooking and vegetable cutting machines are available here. The new equipment in the hostel will help make 1500 chapatis per hour. Apart from this, 12 steam cooking systems, four steam cooking systems capable of making 2000 idlis in 10 minutes, four steam cooking systems have been provided in this hostel. The new building started due to the increasing demand by students to enrol in Gavimath Koppal.
Shri Shanthaveera Swamijii, who was the 16th prefect of Gavimath, started Prasad Nilayam to accommodate the students coming to the school. Now, devotees are also donating to the Free Prasad Nilayam and the old students have joined hands and implemented a transfer system through auto debit. It is under the concept of Akshara Jolyge with the mission of ‘Let’s give one hundred rupees a month, let’s pay off the debt of human birth’.
There is no religion or caste requirement to get admission here. Students from class five to graduation have free admission. Year by year the number of students coming to Prasada Nilayam is increasing. For that, the entrance exam was conducted three times this year. More than 3000 students have already been selected among them. More than 6,000 students appeared for the entrance exam. Students from all districts of North Karnataka come here for admission.
