DAVANGERE: As many as 14 children who were bonded labourers or worked in garages and coffee plantations have passed the SSLC with good grades. These children studied at Chigaru Child Labourer Residential School in Harapanahalli taluk. Prashanth Kumar, son of Devadasi Mylamma, quit studies when he was in first grade to work in a coffee plantation to help his ailing mother. After his mother passed away, he stayed with his grand mother. He and his three sisters continued working in the plantation. Anjinappa, a teacher, admitted him to Chigaru Residential School in the fifth standard. Prashanth has now scored 76 per cent in SSLC. Manjunath Naik of Bhandritanda in Harapanahalli taluk was born to labourers. With the help of Jyothi, a teacher of Chigaru Residential School, he got admitted to the sixth standard in Morarji Residential School. With his perseverance he scored 87 per cent and plans to become an engineer. Similarly, Venkatesh Naik and Raja Naik worked as child labourers in coffee plantations and managed to pass with the help of Chigaru School. Parshurama of Neelagunda village in Harapanahalli taluk was given as a bonded labourer by his father Hanumanthappa who was an alcoholic. He too was picked up by Anjinappa and admitted to Chigaru. He has passed the exam and aspires to be a teacher. Other students of the school Khalandar, Umesh Naik, Punith Kumar, Sunil Kumar, Ramabai, Hanumantha, Venkatesh and Manjunath who were all child labourers, passed with good scores. School convener Sanjiviah told Express that the school identifies child labourers and prepares them for admission to Morarji Residential School to complete SSLC.
