A day after a daily rated labourer (DRL) of JIPMER committed suicide, reportedly upset over the outsourcing of services to a private agency, the administration on Thursday said that the institution had made it mandatory for all DRLs, engaged in maintenance and cleaning operations, to be employed by the agency.
The JIPMER administration, in a statement, refuted the news carried by a section of the media that Jayachandran (33) was denied work at the institute.
The statement added that to ensure that the DRLs were not rendered jobless all of a sudden, a condition was laid down in the tender according to which all DRLs would have to be employed by the successful bidder. Accordingly, G4S Securities and Services, to which the work was eventually outsourced, had already commenced enumeration of DRLs who were to be employed by them, in accordance with the tender. The DRLs, including Jayachandran, were also requested to enroll themselves with the agency, the statement said.
While the reason behind the suicide is being investigated by the police, officials stated that a copy of the forwarding order was shown to the Employees Union representatives and police.
