New Delhi: The special team of the Delhi Police investigating the lapses in the Jessica Lall murder case questioned senior police officer Amod Kanth on Wednesday in connection with the case.
Amod Kanth was the Joint Commissioner of Police (southern range) in Delhi when Jessica Lal was murdered.
Sources said Kanth was questioned at the Delhi Police headquarters on Wednesday evening about reports that he had tried to influence Jessica's sister Sabrina Lal. He reportedly denied the charge.
Kanth also told the police team that he was not involved in the day-to-day developments during the investigation. Amod Kanth is currently holding the charge of Director General of Police in Arunachal Pradesh.
After all the nine accused were acquitted in the case, the Delhi Police had ordered a probe into the charges that some officials might have been involved in fudging evidence, leading to the collapse of the case in the court.
Kanth is the second top-ranking officer to be questioned in the case, which is being re-investigated after the trial court acquitted all the nine accused, including Manu Sharma, who allegedly shot dead the upcoming model.
Earlier, the SIT had questioned Y S Dadwal, Special Commissioner of Delhi Police, who was present at the time of the incident in Tamarind Court restaurant on the night of April 29, 1999.
Jessica's sister Sabrina had recently charged Kanth of influencing the re-investigation by asking her to request for the same team, involved in the earlier probe, to take up the matter.
Earlier as Joint Commissioner of Delhi Police in 1999, Kanth headed the investigation which drew lot of criticism from various quarters as it led to the acquittal of all the accused.
The SIT has also questioned Additional Commissioner (Security) Sudhir Yadav and Chandigarh SSP Vivek Gogia, who were Deputy and Additional Commissioners of Police (south district) respectively when the sensational murder took place.
