CHENNAI: The call given by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) to traders nationwide to down shutters on Thursday to oppose Foreign Direct Investment in retail sale evoked mixed response in different parts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday. In Chennai, many shops were closed, though tea stalls, restaurants and supermarkets did regular business, while in Tiruchy most commercial establishments were open. Representatives of a traders’ association in Tiruchy said they did not participate in the protest, as Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had already announced that she would not allow FDI in the State. Similarly, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu Traders Association had asked its members not to down shutters in view of the assurance given by Jayalalithaa. However, in Coimbatore 90 per cent of the shops, including hotels, bakeries and grocery shops, were closed and in some towns like Sulur, Mettupalayam and Pollachi, the strike was total.
