TIRUCHY: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has ordered a CB-CID probe into the death of Minister for Environment and Pollution Control N Mariyam Pichai in a road accident near Padalur in Perambalur district on Monday.Immediately after the accident, the body was brought to Tiruchy and postmortem conducted. Later, the body was kept at Mariyam Theatre in Sangiliyandapuram to facilitate the public to pay homage to the minister.Jayalalithaa, who flew down to Tiruchy in the afternoon, drove to Mariyam Theatre along with Minister for Finance O Panneerselvam, Minister for Agriculture K A Sengottaiyan and Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare N R Sivapathy and placed a wreath. She also consoled Pichai’s wife Fatima Gani and relatives.Later, speaking to media, Jayalalithaa termed the death as a great loss.She said a CB-CID probe had been ordered, after enquiries with the public, party cadre and family members raised suspicion over the minister’s death. A police investigation is already on in this regard. “Whoever the culprit be, they will be brought before law,” Jayalalithaa assured. The Chief Minister left for Chennai around 3.15 pm.Collector Mahesan Kasirajan, Inspector General of Police (Central Zone) K Vanniaperumal and City Police Commissioner E Ma Masanamuthu were present.Meanwhile in a condolence message to Fatima Gani, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram said he felt heartbroken at the sudden and unfortunate demise of Pichai. “Though I have no personal association with him, I have heard of his dedicated service to the party. I express my condolences,” Chidambaram said.Governor Surjit Singh Barnala also condoled the death of Mariyam Pichai. “The life of a young upcoming dynamic person has been taken away by the clutches of death. I convey my sincere condolences to the bereaved members of the family and pray to God to rest his soul in peace,” Barnala said.
