Japanese National Charged Rs 98,700 for Varanasi Ride by Conman, Then Left Stranded Midway
When the foreign national realized that he had been cheated, he returned to IGI Airport Police Station and reported the incident, prompting the police to register a case

A Japanese national was duped of Rs 98,700 within a few hours after he landed at Delhi. The amount was withdrawn in cash from his credit card by a person, as a charge for driving him to Varanasi in search of accommodation. The fraudster had lied to him saying that all hotels and trains in the national capital were shut owing to heavy protests. Instead of going to Varanasi, the foreign national was dropped midway by another car.

The Japanese national identified as Shunsuke Liu had reached the Indira Gandhi International Airport on a VietJet flight (VJ-935) at around 11 pm on September 17.

After departing from the airport, he was looking for a taxi towards his hotel. A person arrived with his car and informed him that almost all the hotels have been closed in Delhi owing to heavy protests. Extending a helping hand, he told Shunsuke that he can make an alternate arrangement for him to stay in Delhi.

Shunsuke agreed to take his help. The person drove him to the Central Delhi area but roamed around from one spot to the other, late at night. He told Shunsuke that owing to the riots, all the hotels and trains in Delhi have been closed.

The person then offered to send Shunsuke to Varanasi in a car where he can find a hotel. When Shunsuke Liu agreed, this person withdrew Rs 98,700 from his credit card and asked him to get into another car. This car took Shunsuke to a distant place and dropped him midway.

When Shunsuke realized that he had been cheated, he got back to IGI Airport Police Station with some help. He narrated his ordeal to the police personnel there. Based on his complaint, the IGI Airport Police registered a case against some unknown people under Section 318 (4) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 40 of the Touting Act. The police have launched an investigation into the case.
