Janasree: Opposition, government in no mood to climb down

The stand off between the ruling front and the Opposition parties over the Janasree issue has intensified with the latter warning of more agitations and the ruling front remaining adamant on providing projects to all self-help groups.

Coming down heavily on the government, Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan said here on Tuesday that the Congress was jealous of the growth of Kudumbashree Mission. Inaugurating a dharna staged by Kudumbashree Protection Council, he alleged that the government had allotted funds to Janasree Mission in a bid to dismantle the Kudumbashree. The agitation will be intensified if the government did not withdraw the order, he said.

About 2,000 Kudumbashree women participated in the protest. Former ministers Thomas Isaac, M Vijayakumar, C Divakaran and LDF convenor Vaikom Viswan were among those who addressed the agitation. The activists will continue their sit-in in the coming days seeking steps to protect the Kudumbashree Mission.

Meanwhile, Rural Development Minister K C Joseph said that the government would extend all help to self-help groups, including Janasree Mission.

He said this while speaking at a function organised by Janasree as part of the Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations. “We will not go back from rendering help to self-help groups such as Janasree,’’ he said.

Saying that Kudumbashree should not be politicised, the Minister said that those who indulge in activities in the name of protecting Kudumbashree were only trying to destroy the mission.

Janasree Mission chairman M M Hassan said that if the NGOs run by CPM leaders could receive government funds, Janasree could also receive it.
