Even after cases like international calls being made by terror accused from Ernakulam sub-jail, the jail authorities are yet to install advanced equipment to prevent such incidents.
A few months ago, a proposal in this regard was sent to the Prison Department, but was cancelled following heavy cost of the equipment required.
According to sources in the sub-jail, the proposal for a mobile-jammer was submitted two months ago. Then a feasibility study was conducted in this regard.
“After the study, it was learnt that a mobile-jammer would cost over `20 lakh. Besides, the cellphone range in houses situated near the jail will be affected.
“We keep checking every week to prevent such issues from surfacing. Similarly, a proposal was given to install a CCTV camera, but it did not reach anywhere,” the sources said.
Sub-jail Superintendent K Raju said that additional policemen and Prison Department personnel are allotted to the jail.
“For averting such incidents, we have allocated additional men to conduct checking. There are 18 jail wardens and over 20 policemen deployed for security reasons. Every person, including the Prison Department officials, are thoroughly checked by the policemen.
Furthermore, after returning from a court hearing, a full body check-up is done on the accused. There is presently no possibility of incidents like using cellphone on the jail premises,” he said.
