HYDERABAD: Opposition leader N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday demanded that the state government invite fresh tenders for the Polavaram irrigation project.In a letter addressed to chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, Naidu alleged that several irregularities took place in finalising the Polavaram project tenders. Hence, the Congress government should cancel the finalisation of project tenders. It should place all the relevant files before the Assembly Speaker for verification. Stern against should be taken against the officials responsible for irregularities in finalising the tenders, the TDP chief said.Naidu also demanded that the chief minister convene a meeting of floor leaders of all the parties to discuss the issue. The opposition leader lamented that irrigation projects had become a source of income generation for some ruling Congress leaders.The state government which promised to complete the Polavaram (Indira Sagar Project) by 2009 with an estimated cost of Rs 7,850 crore, has failed to fulfil its assurance.The project is way behind schedule, which has resulted in escalation of cost. The government should finalise the Polavaram project tenders in a transparent manner this time, he said.The TDP president demanded fair compensation to Polavaram project oustees as per the Land Acquisition and Resettlement and Rehabilitation (LARR) Bill, 2011.The Centre should declare Polavaram and Pranahita- Chevella national projects to ensure their speedy completion.The state government should take initiative in this regard, he added.
