Hyderabad: India's campaign got off to a disastrous start at the World Badminton Championships in Hyderabad on Monday with the players losing in men's doubles, mixed doubles and women's singles first round.
The men's doubles pair of Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas lost in straight games in the first round to crash out of the World Badminton Championship.
The Indian duo played their hearts out but could not match up to the 14th seed Japanese pair of Kenichi Hayakawa and Kenta Kazuno.
Rupesh-Sanave lost the match 13-21, 21-23 in just over half an hour match.
"We didn't have luck. Some unforced errors, silly mistakes put paid our chances," Rupesh was quoted as saying by PTI after the match.
"We didn't get the right feeling straight from the start and were finding it difficult to get used to the court. There was too much drift because of the air-conditioners," he added.
After seeing the first game slipping out of their hand, the world No. 18 Indian pair pulled up their shocks and leading 20-16 before eventually losing.
"We were good in second game and was leading 20-16 but I don't know what happened, whether it was luck or lapse of concentration we just couldn't do it today," Rupesh said.
The Indian mixed doubles pair of Arun Vishnu and Aparna Balan lost to another unseeded duo of Noriyasu Hirata and Shizuka Matsuo of Japan.
Arun and Aparna lost the match 14-21, 20-22. But there is still hope as eighth seeded Indian pair of Valiyaveetil Diju and Jwala Gutta are already into the third round after getting byes in the first two rounds.
In the women's singles draw Aditi Mutatkar suffered defeat at the hands of Juliane Schenk in the first round. The world No. 11 German made short work of Aditi winning the match comfortably 21-8, 21-12 to move into the second round.
