KOLLAM: The Independence Day was celebrated with national fervour at the Asramam Maidan here on Monday. The celebration organised by the District Administration began by 8.30 a.m. After hoisting the National Flag, Labour Minister Shibu Baby John inspected the guard of honour and took the salute at the Independence Day parade. Personnel from the local police, Armed Reserve Camp, Excise and Forest Departments along with cadets from the Student Police, National Cadets Corps and the Scouts and Guides took part in the parade. Band troops from the Vimala Hridaya Girls HSS, St Aloysius HSS and St Jude HSS also took part in the parade. Chief Minister’s police medals were given away at the function. Assistant Commandant V Ajanthan, Circle Inspector Anitha Kumari, Sub Inspector C Ravindran, ASI Y Thomas, ASI L Manirajan and Senior CPO G Sreekumar received the medals. Mayor Prasanna Earnest felicitated the Freedom Fighters during the function. Primary school children from various schools in the city presented colourful displays.
