In a major step to curb pollution in Delhi, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) directed the Centre and state government not to buy any diesel vehicles for their departments. The NGT order is not applicable to private persons buying a diesel vehicle.

NGT submitted a report to the Delhi government on Thursday in which it was pointed out sale of diesel vehicles has been rising in Delhi. The report reveals that the transport department registered 6,748 more diesel vehicles in 2014 than 2013. In the first five months of 2015, it has registered 34,261 diesel vehicles, which is over 40% of the total number of registrations done in 2014.

In a note submitted to NGT on Tuesday, the Centre had said the share of diesel cars in India peaked in 2013 at 47% and declined thereafter to 37% in 2015

Delhi and the National Capital Region has been facing with very high levels of air pollution in the recent weeks. With winter setting in, the situation is only going to get worse.

The Delhi government of Aam Aadmi Party has already proposed a formula of allowing cars with odd and even numbers on the roads on alternate days.
